DOES YOUR CHILD NEED A GUARDIAN?

In some cases, Down syndrome can have an impact on a child's mental and physical development. This can include impulsive behavior, poor judgment and slow learning.

In order to have a guardian as an adult, however, your child must be incapacitated. This means that your child's Down syndrome must make him or her substantially unable to provide food, clothing or shelter, to care for his or her own physical health, or to manage his or her financial affairs.

Your family physician will need to evaluate your child to determine whether he or she needs a guardian to make his or her day-to-day decisions, including decisions involving finances, medical treatment, marriage and driving. After your physician finds your child needs a guardian, we will help you apply for guardianship and walk you through the guardianship process.

CHANGING GUARDIANSHIPS IN THE FUTURE

As your child grows, learns and develops, it may become necessary to change your guardianship. Later in life, your child may be ready to vote, drive or even get married. We can help you modify or terminate the guardianship at any time in the future.
